Our new Climbing Hall will soon be open and we are receiving lots of questions about it. We hope this means everyone is as excited as us to see a fabulous new space available in Taunton. If your question is not answered below – please ask at climbing@ymcataunton.co.uk.
When will your climbing hall be opening?
ASAP! The hall is ready to use but we are currently recruiting a qualified climbing instructor. As soon as we are ready to take bookings we will be shouting all about it!
Will your hall be open to the public?
Yes, our climbing wall will be open to everyone.
Where are you located?
YMCA Taunton, Lisieux Way, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 2LB.
Do I need previous climbing experience?
No experience is needed for auto belays or beginner sessions. However, mandatory safety induction/orientation is required.
Will you be offering memberships?
Not initially, but we may do in the future. We are very open to discussions with our clients and will be led by them
How much will it cost?
We want to keep the facility accessible to everyone, so we intend to keep the prices as low as possible whilst balancing the need to cover our costs for maintenance and future improvements and investment. Prices will be advertised as soon as they are finalised.
Is there a minimum age?
We have incorporated a low traversing route that is suitable for our preschoolers, so that will be suitable from 2 years. Roped climbs will be open to children, we will be able to confirm age/height restrictions soon.
Will you offer drop in sessions or will it be prebook only?
Initially, pre-booking. This will be done online so it will be easy to check availability before booking.
How do I book?
As soon as booking is open we will put all the details on our how to book page. You will be able to book via our online booking system.
What will the opening times be?
Initially the hall will only be open weekdays at set times, but we eventually hope to be open 7 days a week until late.
Will there be lead climbs and tops ropes, in addition to auto belays?
We have top rope climbs, auto belays and the capability for lead climbs but we are consulting on operating lead climbs due to the safety management and implications. As this is a brand new provision for us we must ensure that it is implemented as safely as possible for all.
What are the gradings?
We have a variety of graded routes from 3 up to 6 with a traversing route for children from the age of 2 upwards.
How high is the wall?
It is 8 metres in height.
Is equipment provided?
We will provide harnesses. You can wear your own climbing shoes or trainers. If using your own, they must be clean and dry.
Are spectators allowed?
Unfortunately we do not have the space for spectators in the hall. However, people can wait in our social area.
Do you cater for groups, parties or schools
Absolutely. Group bookings, parties and school sessions will be available once we are fully open. We’re happy to discuss ideas in advance.
Can I book the hall exclusively?
Private hire will be available for groups, teams, parties or events.
Is the hall accessible?
We welcome climbers with additional needs. Please get in touch so we can chat through any requirements and make sure we can support you safely.
Is there parking on site?
Yes, our car park is free for our users. There is also a bus stop directly outside the centre.
Do I need to complete a waiver?
Yes. All climbers (or their parent/guardian) will need to complete a safety form before their first visit.
Can you support us?
We are currently crowdfunding to raise funds to install 2 more auto belays in the climbing hall. Can you help with a donation? There are lots of rewards you can choose in exchange for your donation, such as Nando’s vouchers, sporting sessions and climbing experiences.
