The Pride of Somerset Youth Awards 2024 ceremony took place on 16th May and huge congratulations are due to Leah Spanswick who won an award.
Young people aged 8 to 18 were recognised at the event for overcoming adversity. CEO of Bridgwater & Taunton College, who sponsored the event, said:
“Young people from across the county go above and beyond, often in the face of adversity, achieving amazing things. This is a great opportunity to reflect on and recognise their achievements.”
Leah has been attending our YMCA Taunton Young Carers group for several months and picked up the Care Award at the ceremony in Bridgwater. In addition to Leah being a carer, she is also a St Johns Ambulance cadet and actively involved in their fundraising activities.
Leah, who is 14, has been caring for her Mum (a wheelchair user) for several years. Leah’s Mum, Carey said:
“We are extremely proud of Leah. She is an inspiration and without her daily help, everything would be hard work. She is an absolute credit. We don’t know who nominated Leah, but we are very grateful that her caring attitude is being recognised”
Leah and Carey attended the Youth Awards, where following nibbles and drinks, Leah was presented with her glass trophy and a framed certificate.
The leader of our Young Carers group said:
“I was delighted to hear Leah had been nominated for the care award and was so happy for Leah when she won. Leah deserves to be recognised for all her extra responsibilities and the caring role she takes on each day. Congratulations Leah on your award”
